CM18 – Master of Laboratory Medicine




📄Unit Synopsis

LMED29013 – Clinical Placement in Laboratory Medicine

Theoretical and technical knowledge will be applied in a professional work environment within a specialised field of diagnostic Medical Laboratory Science. You will develop technical skills and analyse outcomes to meet the competencies required of an entry-level Medical Laboratory Scientist.

You will perform and reflect on safe laboratory practices and quality management, with consideration of relevant legislation, regulation, and accreditation. Professional behaviours are emphasised, including reflection on communication, decision-making, and teamwork skills. Critical appraisal of performance will support the development of professional, technical, and analytical competency.

A minimum of 560 hours of clinical placement (equivalent to 16 weeks full-time) is required in accordance with the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) accreditation standards.

To prepare for your Work-Integrated Learning [WIL] placement experience, you will need to complete a range of compulsory pre-placement conditions.

All conditions must be met before you can commence placement.

 

What to Do

·       Upload evidence for each requirement to the ‘Checks’ tab above.

·       The WIL Compliance office will review your submission. If any evidence is incorrect, you will be required to resubmit updated documentation.

Important Deadlines

 

2026 Term 1 New Enrolments

All requirements need to verified by 14 September 2026

 

2026 Term 2 New Enrolments

All requirements need to be verified by 26 February 2027

 

Continuing Students (All Terms)

All mandatory requirements must be verified at least six (6) weeks prior to your placement commencement date.

 

While you are on placement all requirements must remain current and in date. If your requirements lapse during a placement, you may be removed from placement, and this will delay your course completion.

Organising Your WIL Experience

The WIL Office will organise your placement for you. We will contact you about your preference options.

 

Duration

You will need to complete 560 hours of placement, which is approximately 16-weeks of full-time attendance.

 

Timing

There are typically two attendance blocks each year: February and July.

During the preferencing process, you will be asked to indicate your preferred placement block.

⚠️ Please note:

·            Allocation to a placement block depends on your course study plan and laboratory availability

·            Due to availability, you may be required to travel, including interstate, to complete your WIL placement

 

Flexible Options

In some instances, part-time options may be available (e.g. 20 weeks at 4 days/week), depending on laboratory availability.

 

Travel

You must prepare for potential travel to your assigned laboratory site, as placements are based on site availability. Travel costs are the responsibility of the student.
